Fire ant bites happen when a certain type of venomous ant stings. The stings cause a burning sensation, then itchy welts, often in a circular pattern. The welts turn into blisters. Most people can treat fire ant bites at home with antihistamines, over-the-counter steroid creams and cold compresses.
Since its introduction to the United States, the red imported fire ant has spread throughout the southern states and northeastern Mexico, negatively affecting wildlife and causing economic damage.
Imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren and S. richteri Forel) are invasive pests that may feed on crops such as sorghum, corn, and small grain seeds, forage grass, and citrus seedlings. They can also girdle young trees and injure animals and people.
Treat undesirable fire ant mounds using an individual mound treatment. Products are applied as dusts, granules, granules drenched with water after application, liquid drenches, baits, or aerosol injections. Non-chemical methods such as drenching mounds with very hot water also may be used.
Local reaction If the sting site is itching severely, we recommend a nonsedating oral antihistamine, such as fexofenadine (brand name Allegra) or cetirizine (brand name Zyrtec), and/or a topical anti-itch ointment (eg, 1% hydrocortisone, 1% pramoxine).

In most cases, swelling is localized to the bite and resolves in a few days. If symptoms dont respond to over-the-counter medications, your doctor may advise prescription-strength versions. The pustules that form around a fire ant bite last a week or more.
