The name "Aldermaston" is well known in connection with the UK's nuclear weapons programme, as well as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), which develops, maintains, and disposes of the UK's nuclear weaponry is in the parish.
Aldermaston is the headquarters of the UK's Atomic Weapons Establishment. The AWE is responsible for the design and manufacture of the of the Trident submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile system. Aldermaston in Berkshire is the only place in the UK where nuclear bombs are manufactured.
Once a wartime airfield, today Aldermaston is a centre of excellence, housing advanced research, design and manufacturing facilities. A former munitions factory, AWE Burghfield is a 225-acre site where warheads are assembled and maintained while in service, and decommissioned when out of service.
