Winship Cancer Institute was founded in 1937, with a generous gift to Emory from Coca-Cola President Robert Winship Woodruff, who named the center after his grandfather as a way of honoring his mother who passed away from cancer. His mission was that no one would need to leave Georgia for the best cancer treatment.
