The Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW) is an African-American fraternal order modeled on the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. It was established in 1897 in the United States. In the early 21st century, it has 500,000 members and 1500 lodges in the world.
Leading Knight 1st Vice-President. Assists the Exalted Ruler in the performance of his/her duties. Will officiate in the absence of the Exalted Ruler. Loyal Knight 2nd Vice President. Second in command in the absence of the Exalted Ruler.
Of note is that the elected leadership of the BPO Elks--from the Exalted Rulers of the local Lodges to the national president, known as the Grand Exalted Ruler, and other decision-makers at the various levels--serve without salaries.
In a day or two the custom spread to the streets, with Elks from all parts of the country, and passing each other they sang out cheerfully, Hello Bill! and they carried the greeting back to their home lodges, and so it has spread around the ends of the earth.
The Exalted Ruler is the President and Executive Officer of the lodge. They are responsible for overseeing all lodge activities, ensuring that they align with the mission and values of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.).
