Elite swimmers like Michael Phelps often train for 5-6 hours a day, divided into two sessions. Their training is characterized by high intensity and volume.
The swimmers from each team will race against each other and score a certain amount of points for their team, depending on their times. Once all the events are over, points will be added up, and the team with the most points will win. Duels usually take around three hours with an hour for warm-ups and two for races.
Teams are awarded place points for 1st through 5th place times in individual events, and for 1st or 2nd place times in relay events. But swimmers who do not place in the top five (or even the top 30!) can still help their team by improving on their own personal best times.
Swim meets are typically held at schools during the short course season (September-March) and at both indoor and outdoors pools during the long course season (April-July). Sessions (morning and afternoon) can last anywhere between 2-4 hours each.

The way we do this is to write their event number, heat number, lane number, and the stroke/distance on their forearm or hand. Referring to your heat sheet, and using a permanent marker (such as a Sharpie) in a dark color, create a simple table. Across the top, write E H and L for event, heat, lane.
My kids do USA swim, and though each host team has different rates, that isnt crazy for a meet at all. Generally pay a flat fee, plus a per event rate (usually $3-$10 per event) so a full 3 day weekend meets costs anywhere from $80-$140 average.
