You must be qualified in three areas: Education, Experience and Examination. Education: Applicants must have a bachelors degree in engineering, engineering technology, or a science-related to engineering program. Otherwise, you are required to have 15 years of verifiable, acceptable engineering experience.
In order to qualify to take the PE exam you have to have at least 4 years experience working for a PE as an engineer in training (EIT). The only way to get hired to work as an EIT is to have a 4 year accredited engineering degree. So, yes, you need to get a degree. No shortcuts! Peoples lives are depending on it!
To become licensed, engineers must complete a four-year college degree, work under a Professional Engineer for at least four years, pass two intensive competency exams and receive a license from their states licensure board.
Engineers in Delaware must earn 24 professional development hour credits every 2-year period (biennally). At least 3 but less than 6 PDH must be in the category of ethics. Delaware does not pre-approve course providers or courses. License renewal is June 30th of even numbered years for all engineers.
