Gail J. McGovern assumed the role of Chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Red Cross on July 1, 2024, after serving as the organizations president and CEO for more than 16 years. As Chairman, Gail leads the Board in its governance and oversight of Red Cross operations.
She died at her home in Glen Echo, Maryland, now a national historic site, in April 1912. Her last words were Let me go. Let me go.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement started in 1863 and was inspired by Swiss businessman Henry Dunant. The suffering of thousands of men on both sides of the Battle of Solferino in 1859 upset Dunant. Many were left to die due to lack of care.
