Pearl River County was officially organized by an act of the Legislature in February 1890, on lands taken from Marion and Hancock Counties. The land area of the new county had earlier been a part of the short-lived Pearl County. Pearl County was officially formed in 1872.
Pearl River County is a dry county, and as such, the sale, transportation, and even private possession of beverage alcohol is prohibited by law, except within Picayune and Poplarville.
Originally known as Halloo, for the exclamations of loggers shouting to each other from the banks of the Pearl River, its best known these days for its proximity to the Honey Island Swamp (in fact, Pearl Rivers nickname is The Home of the Honey Island Swamp).
