What equipment do you need to collect water from a hydrant?

When you access a hydrant, use a hydrant key and a hose with the correct kind of nozzle. Make sure you have backflow prevention measures in place and that they are working. This includes using an approved reduced pressure zone device (RPZD) or having your vehicle equipped with an air gap.

What tools are used to make hydrant connections?

If you see one on the side of the road, theres likely a potable water line running underneath that connects to the hydrant valve through a pipe called a riser. Its important to note that hydrants dont alter the pressure or flow of the water in any way.

Can you use water from a fire hydrant?

Water usage from fire hydrants is strictly prohibited unless permission has been obtained from the Director of Public Works or the Water Works Supervisor. If permission is granted by one of these people, certain procedures must be followed before you begin using water from the fire hydrant.

Can anyone use a water hydrant?

Its an offence under section 174 of the Water Industry Act 1991 to draw water without permission and we may take legal proceedings against unauthorised users. Unauthorised use increases the risk of contamination to the public water supply on our network, possible reduction in pressure, or even a mains failure.
