Do any US states have militias?

Nationally, only 23 states feature active state defense forces or guards, and only five operate active naval militias. In the South, this includes eight states: Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Are militias legal in Indiana?

Is it legal to act as a private militia in Indiana? No. All 50 states prohibit private, unauthorized militias and military units from engaging in activities reserved for the state militia, including law enforcement activities.

What states allow private militias?

Chapters of Oath Keepers and other national militia groups sprouted across the country. Then came the insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021, and its aftermath. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) identified 52 active militia groups throughout the United States in 2023, a decline from 61 in 2022.

Do local militias still exist?

Today, to the extent that the civilian militia still exists, it does so in the form of reserve military units that can be called up by the governor or, in some cases, the president. These units operate under state laws that govern their organization, structure and reporting chain.
