Creation of Greenwich Library Around 1800, a small collection of books was acquired and circulated from the Ebenezer Mead House. In 1805, a small group of Greenwich residents, each subscribing $6 a share, formed the Greenwich Town Library. Members were allowed to borrow one book for each share they owned.
Old Greenwichs origins trace back to the early European settlers. Founded in 1640, it was initially known as Elizabeths Neck in honor of the English settler Elizabeth Fones Winthrop Feake. Colonial Era: The town played a modest role during the Revolutionary War.
The Town of Greenwich was formed from part of the Town of Argyle in 1803. In 1809, the community of Whipple City incorporated as a village and adopted the name Union Village. In 1867, the name was changed to Greenwich. Greenwich views itself as having been an important location along the Underground Railroad.
