Definition & Meaning

The ISEF forms play a crucial role in the annual International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), where students submit their science projects for evaluation. These forms are required to document the details of research projects, ensuring compliance with ethical standards and guidelines. Each form captures different aspects of a project, such as informed consent for human subjects, animal care protocols, and environmental considerations. This ensures that all participants adhere to the fair's rigorous standards, thus maintaining the integrity and credibility of the competition.

Steps to Complete the ISEF Forms

Completing the ISEF forms involves several important steps to ensure accuracy and compliance with the fair's guidelines:

  1. Understanding the Requirements: Begin by familiarizing yourself with the different forms necessary for your project type. This might include forms related to human subjects, hazardous materials, and more.

  2. Gathering Information: Collect all the necessary data and documentation for each form. This might include project summaries, research plans, consent forms, and proof of ethical approval.

  3. Filling Out the Forms: Carefully complete each form with the gathered information. Ensure that all details, such as project titles, investigator names, and contact information, are accurate and complete.

  4. Review and Verification: Once filled, review each form for completeness and accuracy. This may involve cross-checking details against the project's research plan and other documents.

  5. Approval and Submission: Submit the forms for approval by relevant authorities, such as Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) or Scientific Review Committees (SRCs). Only after approval can the forms be considered valid for entry into the competition.

How to Obtain the ISEF Forms

Participants can obtain the ISEF forms through several methods:

  • ISEF Website: The official ISEF website regularly updates and provides all necessary forms for download. Participants can easily access the latest versions suitable for their year of competition.

  • Educator or Mentor Guidance: Teachers, mentors, or project coordinators often distribute the necessary forms. They assist students in choosing and filling out the appropriate ones.

  • Local Science Fair Organizations: Schools or regional science fair organizations typically provide access to the necessary forms and guidance on completing them.

Who Typically Uses the ISEF Forms

ISEF forms are primarily used by:

  • Students and Project Participants: High school students who are preparing research projects for submission to the International Science and Engineering Fair.

  • Educators and Mentors: Teachers and mentors guiding students through the science fair process utilize these forms to ensure projects meet all necessary guidelines and ethical standards.

  • Review Committees: Scientific Review Committees and Institutional Review Boards use these forms to evaluate and approve project submissions, ensuring compliance with ISEF rules.

Key Elements of the ISEF Forms

The ISEF forms are composed of several key elements that participants must address:

  • Project Information: Basic information about the project, including title, student name(s), and the educational institution involved.

  • Research Plans: Detailed explanations of the project's goals, methods, and anticipated impacts.

  • Compliance Sections: Safety and regulatory compliance sections that may vary depending on the specific form and project type, including human subject approvals and hazardous material handling protocols.

  • Signature Requirements: Necessary signatures from students, guardians, and any supervising adults or committee members to verify validity.

Legal Use of the ISEF Forms

The ISEF forms ensure legal compliance and ethical standards by:

  • Verifying Ethical Approvals: They confirm that the project has been reviewed and approved by relevant Institutional Review Boards or equivalent bodies.

  • Ensuring Participant Protection: The forms document informed consent, risk assessment, and data protection protocols, particularly when human subjects are involved.

  • Maintaining Integrity: By requiring signatures from all parties involved, the forms uphold the integrity and accountability of the research process.

Form Submission Methods (Online / Mail / In-Person)

Participants can submit the ISEF forms through:

  • Online Platforms: Many fairs offer digital submission through their respective portals, which can streamline the entry and approval process.

  • Mailing Physical Copies: Some fairs might require hard copies to be mailed to the organizing committee for review.

  • In-Person Submission: For local or regional fairs, in-person submission during scheduled registration events may be possible.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility to use ISEF forms hinges on several factors:

  • Age and Enrollment Requirements: Participants typically must be high school students enrolled in an institution recognized by the local or national education authority.

  • Project Type and Compliance: Projects must adhere to ISEF guidelines, including permissible material use, ethical standards, and participation in qualifying regional fairs.

  • Submission Deadlines: Entry deadlines must be strictly followed, with all forms completed and submitted by specified dates to guarantee eligibility in the competition.

By addressing all these aspects, this content provides a comprehensive understanding of the ISEF forms, their significance, and the processes involved in their completion and submission.

The ISEF forms constitute written documentation of what will occur, or in some cases, has already occurred, in a research project. They are designed to provide the information that is needed to review the project to ensure compliance with the ISEF rules and with laws and regulations that apply to the project.
A student must be selected by an Regeneron ISEF-affiliated fair, and meet both of the following: a. be in grades 9-12 or equivalent; and. b. not have reached age 20 on or before May 1 preceding the Regeneron ISEF.
To qualify for ISEF, you first need to do well at your regional/national ISEF affiliated science fair. This will probably involve submitting a report, making a poster and delivering a presentation to the judges. However, projects that do well at GSF or ISEF have a good chance of doing well at the other fair.
Of course, there is significant value to be found in doing well in one of these fairs as well. Colleges admire significant academic achievements, and receiving a top prize at a major science fair such as ISEF definitely qualifies.
Examine the quality of the Finalists work, and how well the Finalist understands his or her project and area of study. The physical display is secondary to the students knowledge of the subject. Look for evidence of laboratory, field or theoretical work, not just library research or gadgeteering.
