Unlike other Medicaid eligibility groups, QMB benefits are not retroactive. Coverage begins the first day of the month following the month in which the individual is determined to qualify for this eligibility group.
If your income is slightly too high for you to qualify for QMB benefits, you may still be eligible for another state medical assistance program: Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB). The resource limits for SLMB eligibility are the same as for a QMB, but the income limits are 20% higher.
Benefit. Individuals who apply for SLMB Only get payment (Buy-in) only for their Medicare Part B premium and no other benefits. SLMB does NOT pay for ones Medicare Part A premium, or for Part A and B deductibles and coinsurance. SLMB only recipients do not receive a MC BIC.
A friendly reminder: You cant balance bill Medicare beneficiaries who have extra benefits. Some dual-eligible Medicare beneficiaries have extra benefits. You cant charge these members for cost sharing.
QMB is better. Pays for copays, coinsurance, and premiums A+B. SLMB just pays the part B premium.
