The FBI Name Check for an individual involves a search of the FBIs Central Records System Universal Index for any appearance of the name of the individual, as well as close phonetic variants and permutations of that name, in any of the records stored in the Universal Index.
The FBI disseminates the information contained in the FBIs files to USCIS in response to the name check requests. The FBI name check must be completed and cleared before an applicant for naturalization is scheduled for his or her naturalization interview.
Information regarding Name Check requests can be found on the FBIs National Name Check Program webpage. Please note that the National Name Check Program only accepts requests submitted by other federal agencies; requests received from the general public will not be accepted.
