There are two mandatory retirement program options, the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), and the Optional Retirement Program (ORP). TRS requires staff and faculty employees who work for at least 20 hours per week for 18 weeks or longer during the September 1 August 31 plan year to contribute to TRS.
At least age 55 but less than age 62, have at least 20 years of service credit, and meet the Rule of 80 (combined age and years of service credit total at least 80), or. At least age 62, meet the Rule of 80, and have at least five years of service credit.
Texas law requires all benefits-eligible employees to be automatically enrolled in TRS at the time they are hired. Benefits eligible means expected to work at least 20 hours per week for at least 4 months or more, excluding students employed in positions that require student status as a condition of employment.
