McNamara determined that a new smaller rifle that fired a small cartridge would be easier and cheaper to produce and move around. So the M14 was put away for the M16.

In January 1963, Secretary McNamara received reports that M14 production was insufficient to meet the needs of the armed forces and ordered a halt to M14 production.
