Confined spaces are usually broken down into two groups: Non-Permit and Permit. Permit confined spaces are the most hazardous and require you or some qualified person to completed a safety checklist, simply called a permit, before you enter in to the space.
Permit-required confined spaces (PRCS) differ from general confined spaces by having specific hazards that can be controlled but not eliminated, requiring a formal permit system for entry. General confined spaces do not have the same stringent safety protocols.
The terms permit-required confined space and permit space refer to spaces that meet OSHAs definition of a confined space and contain health or safety hazards. For this reason, OSHA requires workers to have a permit to enter these spaces.
A non-permit required confined space meets the definition of a confined space but does not have any additional known or potential hazards. A permit-required confined space (PRCS) is a confined space with one or more actual or potential hazards e.g., entrapment, engulfment, or hazardous atmospheres.
