Hendersonville is home to scenic hiking trails, gorgeous waterfalls, the State Theater of North Carolina, and the Carl Sandburg National Historic site. A strong school system and health care infrastructure combined with a variety of culinary eateries, breweries, cideries, and wineries provide something for everyone.
Athens, the largest city and county seat, is near the geographical center of the county (at 3210 N, 9550 W), about sixty miles southeast of Dallas on U.S. Highway 175, at the intersection of State highways 31 and 19. Henderson County is in a transitional region between East and Central Texas.
Like its county seat, Hendersonville (incorporated in 1847), the county takes its name from Leonard Henderson, chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1829 to 1833. Other Henderson County communities include Fletcher, Laurel Park, and Flat Rock.
Like the county, the city is named for 19th-century North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Leonard Henderson. The population was 13,137 at the 2010 census and was estimated in 2019 to be 14,157.
