To practice as a physical therapist in the U.S., you must earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education-accredited physical therapist education program and pass a state licensure exam. The length of professional DPT programs is typically three years.
After completing a bachelors degree, the next step is pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. In California, as in most states, a DPT degree is the minimum educational requirement to practice as a licensed physical therapist.
Earn your bachelors degree. Alternatively, you could also enter a 3+3 program, which allows you to undertake three years of undergraduate work and then enter your three-year DPT program. This option reduces the time spent in school to six years instead of the seven it takes to complete a bachelors and DPT program.
To become licensed, one must possess a post baccalaureate degree in physical therapy, pass the national physical therapy examination (NPTE), and pass the California Law Examination. Foreign educated physical therapists must also successfully complete a period of clinical service after passing the NPTE.
PSYCHOLOGY LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS Possess a qualifying doctoral degree [Business and Professions Code (BPC) 2914(b)] Complete a total of 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience, 1,500 of which must be accrued post-doctorally [Title 16, California Code of Regulations (CCR) 1387]
