It is not a legal requirement to hold a licence to operate a recreational vessel in New Zealand, but to ensure the safety of yourself and others, and ensure you know how to comply with all maritime rules, all skippers should complete at least some form of training. Day Skipper is the minimum qualification recommended.
The training record is your apprentices or trainees learning diary which documents their progress and achievement of competencies outlined in the training plan. It provides an opportunity for all parties to gauge how the apprentice or trainee is progressing.
SRL is an entry-level command certificate with engineering components. With SRL, you can perform a skippers (masters) functions and duties on: passenger and non-passenger ships less than 12 metres length overall, carrying up to 19 passengers within restricted limits (which includes both enclosed and inshore limits)
Requirements prove that you meet the minimum sea service requirements. complete and pass the approved qualification for SRL. have current certificates for the required ancillary proficiencies. pass Maritime NZs final exam. prove that you are a fit and proper person. be medically fit and have good eyesight.
The course itself takes 46 weeks and is on a part time basis. Award of the Skipper Restricted Limits Certificate by Maritime New Zealand may also require the completion of a logbook, an oral exam and ancillary certificates.
