You do not need a valid travel signature to leave the U.S., but you do need one to enter the U.S.
The school official (either a Responsible Officer or Alternate Responsible Officer) signs the DS-2019 digitally and then sends it to you electronically via docHub. If an update or change needs to be made on the DS-2019, the school official makes these requests through SEVIS and a new document is produced.
This form allows an F or M student to pay the I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System fee and apply for a nonimmigrant visa to enter the United States. Any accompanying F-2 or M-2 dependent also must have a Form I-20.
The travel signature is on page two of an I-20 or page one of a DS-2019. The signature confirms that you have valid F-1 or J-1 status. You must have a valid travel signature on your I-20 or DS-2019 to return to the U.S. after you travel abroad. Each signature is valid for one year.
How Often Should I Get my I-20 or DS-2019 Signed? A travel signature is valid for 12 months. If on F-1 OPT, we recommend a new travel signature every 6 months.
