Most kids start swim lessons around 1-3 years old, so your toddler is definitely in the right age range. Its a great idea to focus on water safety early. Many parents find lessons for little ones helpful for building comfort in the water, even if its more about fun and safety than actual swimming skills at first.
While basic water safety and the fundamentals of swimming can often be learned in around 8-12 lessons, mastering swimming as a skill with proficiency in multiple strokes might require ongoing lessons and practice over several months or even years.
The AAP recommends starting between 1 and 4 years old. This is largely based on a randomized trial where young children were put into 8 or 12 weeks of swim lessons. They found that swimming ability and water safety reactions improve in both groups, and more so in the 12 weeks group.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children start swimming lessons at 1 year of age. Before that, there is no evidence that swim classes decrease the likelihood of drowning. However, they do allow parents and infants to play together and get children used to being in the water.
The age will depend on the personality of the child, but as soon as theyre old enough to be meandering around without complete adult supervision then they should know how to swim. For most kids right around 3 is great, but itll depend on the individual.
