If you have your own health insurance through a family member or other qualified plan, you can submit a waiver request via MySHR in the Insurance Waiver/Enrollment tab. If you have decided to take SHIP/Aetna, no action is required for full-time in-person programs, you will be automatically enrolled.

What does it mean to waive student health insurance?

A waiver is a declaration by the student that he/she is currently enrolled in a health insurance plan and consequently are waiving their enrollment or participation in the student health insurance plan.

How to waive American University health insurance?

You must request a health insurance waiver every year that you are required to have health insurance. After you submit your waiver request, it will be reviewed and a decision made within 5 business days. Please be aware that approval is not automatic. You will receive an email when your waiver decision has been made.
