A written burning permit can be obtained through any DNR Forestry Office or an active fire warden at no cost. It is good for up to three continuous days, as listed on your permit. You can activate your written permit by phone (if conditions are safe to burn).
Homeowners can burn yard trimmings if its allowed under local ordinances, no public pickup is available and it doesnt cause a public nuisance. Yard waste must not include logs more than 6 inches in diameter and stumps. Other allowable burning includes campfires, outdoor barbecues and bonfires for festive occasions.
Open Burning Permits are available at the station from 8am to 4pm Monday thru Friday or you can go to the North Carolina Forest Service Website (by clicking the icon above) to obtain a permit online. Click on the NC Forest Service icon to be directed to the NC Forest Service Burn Permit website.
Residential yard waste and commercial land clearing burning can only occur between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. (No new vegetation can be added to a burn pile after 6 p.m.). Also, burning is only allowed when the air quality forecast is Code Green or Code Yellow. Burning on Code Orange, Red or Purple days is prohibited.
