Can you get insurance on a car with a salvage title? You can legally buy or sell a vehicle with a salvage title. But because its generally illegal to drive one of these cars on the road unless its to or from a vehicle inspection site its not possible to obtain car insurance on a salvage vehicle.
In other words, the insured is responsible for covering or paying for all losses, damages, and expenses up to the retention amount, after which the insurer begins making payments. Consequently, you can think of a retention as the risk that you retain (hence the term retention).
An owner-retained title may be obtained when an insurance company deems a vehicle to be a total loss and the owner keeps possession of the vehicle. The vehicle must have an active registration and must be capable of being legally and safely operated at the time of the loss.
If a salvage vehicle is rebuilt for use on roadways, the DMV must examine it before issuing a new title certificate or registration. The required examination is part of the NY State Auto Theft Prevention Program.
