Originally intended to number 132, only 21 were built due to cost overruns and the end of history after the Soviet Unions collapse, which justified the procurement holiday from which the Air Force has never recovered. Today, the Air Force plans to acquire just 100 B-21 Raiders, the next-generation stealth bomber.
The B-25 medium bomber was one of Americas most famous airplanes of World War II. It was the type used by Gen. Jimmy Doolittle for the Tokyo Raid on April 18, 1942. Subsequently, B-25s saw duty in every combat area being flown by the Dutch, British, Chinese, Russians and Australians in addition to U.S. forces.
At present, the Air Force plans to acquire at least 100 B-21s, but senior U.S. military officials have been increasingly advocating for a fleet of 145 of the bombers. A single pre-production Raider is now in flight testing, with a second expected to join it soon.
But that level of secrecy and precision came at a cost$2 billion per plane. Between 1987 and 2000, just 21 of these futuristic bombers were built before production was halted. The eye-watering price tag combined with postCold War budget cuts made it one of the rarest aircraft in U.S. military history.
The B-21 is the future of deterrence and the worlds first sixth-generation aircraft to docHub the skies. [The B-21] was developed with a combat lethality mindset, hand in glove with the engineers, acquisition professionals, and industry professionals that knew how to develop a capability so exquisite.
