The Obsessive Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R) (Foa et al., 2002) is an 18-item self-report questionnaire and measures OCD symptoms across 6 subscales including washing, checking, neutralising, obsessing, ordering and hoarding.
The possible range of scores is from 0-72. The mean score for persons with OCD is 28.0 (with a standard deviation of 13.53). The recommended cut-off score is 21, with scores at or above this level indicating the likely presence of OCD.
Lower scores are better. A total score of 42 or more, or a mean score of 2.5 or more in any of the subscales suggests the presence of OCD, but is not diagnostic.
While online OCD tests act as a powerful first step to gaining clarity and exploring effective treatment options, only a skilled clinician can accurately diagnose OCD.
The OCI consists of 42 items composing 7 subscales: Washing, Checking, Doubting, Ordering, Obsessing (i.e., having obsessional thoughts), Hoarding, and Mental Neutralizing. Each item is rated on a 5-point (0- 4) Likert scale of symptom frequency and associated distress.
