A person may not place bait for bears unless the person has a current year bear license or is operating under the direction of a person with a current year bear license. Registration of all bait stations is required. See complete rules in the bait stations section (PDF) of the bear hunting regulations.
You must use Township/Range/Section to register your baits. GPS coordinates required for use of drum. Definitions: Township=North/South coordinates; Range=East/West coordinates; Section = #1-36. This form must be mailed no later than the next postal service day following establishment of the bait station.
Baiting bears with chocolate has since become an issue for state wildlife authorities. Theobromine, and to some degree caffeine, is a toxic compound found in chocolate and the reason why its poisonous to some animals.
Bait stations use food to attract bears. This one has a combination of bread and dogfood with sweet syrup poured over the top. More than 70% of national parklands in Alaska are available to hunters.
Only biodegradable materials may be used for bait. The only parts of fish or wildlife which can legally be used as bait are heads, bones, guts, skin, and the skinned carcasses of furbearers and fur animals.
