Charles Mears died in 1895, but his legacy lives on. In 1923, Mears daughter Carrie deeded 600 feet of beach to the state of Michigan. This land was the beginning of what would become the present Charles Mears State Park.
History. Michigans state parks system was started in 1919. Three Michigan state parks pre-date the creation of the park system in 1919: Mackinac Island State Park (1895), Michilimackinac State Park (1909) and Interlochen State Park (1917). Mackinac Island State Park was created in 1895.
The community of Pentwater Michigan, founded in 1867 by Charles Mears, is located between the Little Sable Lighthouse and the Big Sable Lighthouse on the West Michigan sunset shoreline.
Paved campsite lots are surrounded by fine sand and a swimming beach is adjacent to the harbor pier. The existing park land was once owned by Charles Mears, an early settler of Pentwater. The land was donated to the State of Michigan in 1923 by Carrie Mears, the daughter of Charles Mears.

One of the states earliest purchases was the site of Interlochen State Park in 1917. Although the land was purchased prior to 1919, Interlochen was the first public park to be transferred to the Michigan State Park Commission in 1920 and is considered Michigans first state park.
