Universal Credit has replaced Housing Benefit for most new claimants. You can only make a new claim for Housing Benefit if one of the exceptions below applies. If not, you will have to claim Universal Credit instead and if you are eligible, your housing costs will be included as part of your award.
Theres no set amount of Housing Benefit and what you get will depend on whether you rent privately or from a council. Use a benefits calculator to work out what you could get or check what extra help is available.
Tenants of certain types of Supported Accommodation will receive help with their rent from Housing Benefit, rather than Universal Credit, even if they receive Universal Credit for their other living costs. This provision is restricted to accommodation, classified as Specified Accommodation.
You can apply for Housing Benefit through your local council to help pay your rent. Housing Benefit is being replaced by Universal Credit. Most people will need to claim Universal Credit instead. Check if youre eligible for Housing Benefit before you apply.
You must apply for rental assistance through your local Public Housing Agency. You can find your local housing agency(s) in your area using HUDs Public Housing Agency Directory. Due to high demand and long waiting lists for housing vouchers, you may need to apply to multiple Public Housing Agency waitlists.
