Qualitative fit test: A pass/fail test to assess the adequacy of respirator fit. Relies on the individuals response to the test agent.
Record Keeping As stated under 29 CFR 1910.134(m)(2), the following information must be recorded: the name of the employee; the type of test performed (QLFT or QNFT); specific respirator tested; date of the test; and the results of the test. This information must be retained until the next fit test is administered.
If a worker fails their test, then this means that the respirator is not a good fit or that a good seal was not achieved. If adjusting the respirator does not achieve a better seal, then the worker should not use that make and model of respirator.
The main difference between the two is that a QLFT relies on a persons sense of smell or taste to determine the fit, while a QNFT test measures the actual difference in particles in the test atmosphere versus that inside the wearers mask to determine its fitness in a particular environment.
If you find that the fit of your respirator becomes unacceptable, you must be allowed to select a different type of respirator and be retested. The selection may include a new make, model, style, or size of respirator. Facial hair, like a beard or mustache, can affect your respirators ability to protect you.

(6) If the person being fit tested reports detecting the irritant smoke at any time, the test is failed. The person being retested must repeat the entire sensitivity check and fit test procedure.
Qualitative fit testing is a pass/fail method used on half-masks that relies on senses - such as taste and smell - to detect air leakage from your respirator. The half masks being tested much have an overall fit factor (mask particle concentration divided by the ambient particle concentration) of 100 or less.
Qualitative Respirator Fit Tests To detect leakage into the respirator face piece, qualitative fit tests use your sense of taste or smell, or your reaction to an irritant. This is a pass/fail method that relies on whether or not you detect leakage of the test substance into your face piece.
