If you send the slides instead of bring them to your appointment, please keep in mind that they are fragile. They can break if not packaged properly. They should be wrapped in bubble plastic and put in a sturdy box. Please send them FedEx or UPS so you can track and confirm delivery.
How do I obtain these slides? Call the hospital where your biopsy or surgery was performed or where the tissue was sent. In most cases, you will speak to a pathology department. The pathology department may request that you sign a release for the slides.
After drying, slides can be shipped in a slide mailer with desiccant pouches. Ensure that the slide mailer generates a tight seal. Include ice packs if drastic temperature changes are anticipated during transportation.
Wrap the slide container in bubble wrap, if possible, and/or use a bubble wrap lined manila envelope. Place blocks in a carrier or plastic bag. Blocks may be placed in a container with a refrigerant gel pack for protection against melting that may occur during shipping.
Ship cytology samples separately from biopsy specimens. Exposure of cytology slides to formalin or formalin fumes often results in cellular degradation and loss of diagnostic quality. If separate shipping in not possible, please quadruple bag each specimen type to reduce the chances of cytology exposure.
