The Joburg Market, then known as the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market, was deemed a non-core function of the Metro Council and was corporatised in July 2000, becoming the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market (Pty) Ltd. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Council, however, remained the sole shareholder of the Market.
The Joburg Market is first and foremost a commission market - farmers deliver their produce to market agents who then sell it to buyers.
You will need to come to Joburg Market with your ID, and go to our Customer Service Kiosks found at the Vegetable Hall, Fruit Hall and Potato Hall to register as a buyer. The first card is issued for free. If you lose it later, you will be charged R50.
Trade takes place in three (3) Foodhubs, namely: Fruit Hub, Potato Onion Hub and Vegetable Hub measuring a total of 65 000m2. This remarkable market is easily accessible from the main freeways and is located just 5km south of Johannesburgs central business district.
Buying Options This can be done by approaching customer service on the sales floor. There you will be required to complete a form and hand in a copy of your Identity Document. You will then be issued with a smart buying card to deposit your chosen amount at any cashier available on the sales floor.
