How do you form TB?

Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. People with active TB disease in the lungs or voice box can spread the disease. They release tiny droplets that carry the bacteria through the air. This can happen when theyre speaking, singing, laughing, coughing or sneezing.

Does DHEC do TB tests?

DHEC provides tuberculosis screening only for TB suspects/cases, and contacts to a TB case. TB case is a person with suspected or confirmed TB disease; sometimes referred to as an index case or index patient.

What is the waiting period for a TB test?

The skin test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours after administration by a health care worker trained to read TST results. A patient who does not return within 72 hours will need to be rescheduled for another skin test. The reaction should be measured in millimeters of the induration (firm swelling).
