How do you score points in Olympic water polo? Players score in Olympic water polo by throwing the ball completely past the goal line of the opponents goal. Each goal is worth one point. A ball can also be pushed passed the face of the goal to score a point.
Water Polo Club 13 players in each team. Played over 8 minute (actual play) quarters. Players are only allowed the use of one hand (except for the goalkeeper) Players are not allowed to stand on the bottom of the pool. A player can only be tackled when they have hold of the ball.
Game Time. Under FINA rules, a water polo match is divided into quarters. Each of the four periods is eight minutes long but because the clock is stopped when the ball is not in play, in real life the average quarter lasts around 12 minutes.
This means that there must be a shot taken at the goal within 30 seconds, otherwise the ball is turned over to the counterparty. The time is monitored at the scorers table. If after a shot at goal the ball again comes into possession of the same (offensive) team, the clock is reset back to 30 seconds.
