Blastomycosis is an invasive fungal infection endemic to parts of eastern North America. Blastomycosis is hyperendemic in northwestern Ontario and central Wisconsin, and thought to be endemic throughout the Great Lakes region and the St Lawrence, Ohio, and Mississippi river valleys [1,2].
You can get blastomycosis by contact with moist soil, most commonly where there is rotting wood and leaves. The fungus enters the body through the lungs, where the infection starts. The fungus can then spread to other parts of the body. The disease may affect the skin, bones and joints, and other areas.
Reporting. Healthcare facilities or laboratories that suspect they have a patient with C. auris infection should contact state or local public health authorities and CDC (candidaauris@cdc.gov) immediately for guidance.
Histoplasmosis is not a nationally reportable disease. The average annual incidence is between 1 to 2 cases per 100,000 population.
Valley fever (coccidioidomycosis) is reportable in select states. Health departments collect and send information on cases to CDC through the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS).
