It is referred to as the Intracoastal Waterway and not the Intercoastal Waterway for a reason. The term intra means within, while inter means between. Since the waterway runs along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts instead of equally between two coasts, intracoastal is a better term.
How big of a boat do you need for the Intracoastal waterway? The best boats to travel down the ICW are motorboats or sailboats with a mast no higher than 64 or a keel not too much deeper than 5.
To optimize the time, most cruisers have the lines in at of dawn (COD) and plan to be off the water with an hour or two of daylight left. This allows them to travel between 40 and 70 nautical miles each day. At that pace, completing the ICW would take three to four weeks, provided you do not stop.
The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway extends more than 1,100 miles from Norfolk, VA to Key West, FL. Some lengths consist of natural inlets, salt-water rivers, bays, and sounds; others are man-made canals. Congress authorized the creation of the AIWW in 1919 and the entire waterway was completed in 1940.

This route extends approximately 3,000 miles and is essentially two waterways along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. While transiting this path, boaters will encounter different ports, U.S. Coast Guard facilities, military bases, and even coastal ecosystems.
