The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW), referred to as the Ditch, is the most common and popular route for boaters cruising from the Chesapeake Bay to Florida. Officially the AICW starts in Norfolk, VA and ends in Key West, FL.
The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway serves ports from Boston to Key West, Fla. The route is linked by several essential man-made canals, including the Cape Cod, Chesapeake and Delaware, and Chesapeake-Albemarle. The lowest controlling depth is 6.1 feet (1.9 m) in the Dismal Swamp Canal of Virginia and North Carolina.
The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway extends more than 1,100 miles from Norfolk, VA to Key West, FL. Some lengths consist of natural inlets, salt-water rivers, bays, and sounds; others are man-made canals.
It is a 22- mile-long waterway connecting the Chesapeake Bay to the Albemarle Sound by way of the Elizabeth and Pasquotank Rivers. The canal forms part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, which as currently conceived runs from Norfolk, Virginia, to Miami, Florida.
The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a 3,000-mile (4,800 km) inland waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States, running from Massachusetts southward along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the southern tip of Florida, then following the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, Texas.
