A safety standards certificate is a document that outlines the health of a vehicle. You need it to get a license plate for a vehicle. The certificate proves a vehicle meets the minimum required safety standards in Ontario. The certificate does not guarantee the condition of the vehicle.
MVIS' offering safety inspections will be able to join the new program in late 2022 and throughout 2023. The program will become fully digital, increasing the opportunity to collect more detailed inspection results, vehicle photos and to improve and monitor station performance and compliance.
Starting with heavy vehicles and expanding to passenger vehicles next year, tablet-based inspections will be the norm. The new program is expected to be in effect for all vehicles \u2013 from motorcycles to heavy trucks \u2013 by July 1, 2021.
Validity period A safety standards certificate is valid for 36 calendar days after the inspection. Please note that if it expires before you register your vehicle, you will have to pay for a new inspection and certificate.
Hourly rates range from $90 to $120. Shops are saying they will likely charge an hour and a half for the new inspection, which requires about 10 minutes of paperwork and a road test.

You need a safety standard inspection and certificate if you are: registering a rebuilt vehicle. transferring a used vehicle to a new owner (unless the new owner is your spouse) registering a vehicle in Ontario that was bought in or came from another province, territory or country.
