They get sold to textile recyclers. Sure, thats better than a landfill, but if your sweater isnt picked up in a few weeks, it can end up as carpet padding, insulation or ragsor even sold overseas.
Any clothing we are not able to sell in our shops is sold for reuse overseas. We act responsibly with all donations, using them to raise essential funds for The Salvation Army and avoiding unnecessary waste going to landfill. There is great need for pre-owned clothing in countries less affluent than the UK.
The best items are set aside for resale in thrift stores. Only 20-30% of donated clothes actually make it to thrift store shelves, where they are sold to support charitable programs. The majority of unsold items are shipped overseas, where they flood local markets or end up as waste.
We still have our standard clothing banks on site that you can donate to. These will go to our Processing Centre for sorting. We offer donations to our charity first and some will go to our charity shops for resale to raise money for our charity.
Clothes Are Collected Taken To A Textile Recycling Facility. SATCoL is the name of the textile recycling organisation run by The Salvation Army. They are the largest charity-owned textiles collector in the UK and have generated more than 100 million in donations in the last 10 years.
