To perform a forensic DNA analysis, DNA is first extracted from a sample. Just one nanogram of DNA is usually a sufficient quantity to provide good data. The region containing each STR is then PCR amplified and resolved according to size, giving an overall profile of STR sizes (alleles).
DNA sample requirements depend on the number of tests ordered and the size of the genes/panels selected. Most tests can be completed with 15-25 ug of high quality DNA.
At DDC we provide at least a 99.9% probability on prenatal paternity tests. A prenatal test is just as accurate as a postnatal test.
Avoid putting anything in your mouth for at least an hour prior to collecting cheek-cell samples. Foreign particles from food, liquids, toothpaste and tobacco byproducts don't alter the DNA but they can mask it. The consequence is that the sample becomes degraded and therefore unusable for paternity testing.
Send Results Results are typically available within 3-5 business days for routine paternity cases.

Is DNA evidence alone enough to acquit or convict? It is easier to exclude a suspect than to convict someone based on a DNA match. The FBI estimates that one-third of initial rape suspects are excluded because DNA samples fail to match.
The most common reference samples collected from known individuals are blood, oral/buccal swabs, and/or plucked hairs (e.g., head, pubic).
DNA sample requirements depend on the number of tests ordered and the size of the genes/panels selected. Most tests can be completed with 15-25 ug of high quality DNA. The minimum concentration is 250 ng/ul. DNA samples should be suspended in Qiagen PureGene buffer, TE (10 mM/1 mM), or molecular biology grade water.
Automated Precision The DDC laboratory uses Biomek® FXp and Biomek® 4000 systems to purify and prepare the samples before the actual DNA test.
Tests that test the DNA shared between a child and a parent can have a low chance of offering a false positive or come back inconclusive. However, when it comes to the modern DNA testing process, the chance of something being wrong or misleadingly inaccurate is less than a 10% chance.
