Carry Concealed: New York State is not an open carry state. All permits are Carry Concealed with exception of Premises Permits.
The NY SAFE Act prohibits possession of a magazine that has the capacity to hold more than ten (10) rounds of ammunition regardless of when it was manufactured or when it was obtained. It also prohibits possession of a magazine if it is loaded with more than seven (7) rounds of ammunition, unless you are at a range.
Individuals who currently have concealed carry permits and recertify those permits with the New York State Police are not required to complete this new training. Renewal and recertification of concealed carry permits is now required every three years instead of five.
The first kind, called a restricted (or sportsman) license, only allows someone to possess the gun at home and at certain other specific locations, such as their job or a shooting range. The second kind, called unrestricted, allows a person to carry the concealed gun anywhere allowed by law.
You are still required to have a license to possess a pistol or revolver. * Nothing in the recent United States Supreme Court decision changes this fact. *Note: Requirements for a semi-automatic rifle are addressed in Questions 19-21.
