The state office for vital records, or the state equivalent, provides access to marriage license records and issues official and certified copies of marriage documents to persons authorized by law to obtain them.
Applying for a Marriage License A marriage license is what authorizes you to get married. Maryland law requires a marriage license from the Clerk's Office of the Circuit Court where the marriage will take place. Once the license is issued, it is valid for 6 months from the date the license is issued.
A license is not effective until 6:00 a.m. on the second calendar day after the license is issued. The license is issued the same day you apply, and after the waiting period it is valid for 6 months (you must be married within 6 months or the license will be void).
Copies of records are available to order online. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us directly at msa.helpdesk@maryland.gov. Request an appointment so that our staff can best assist you.
Copies may be obtained in person or by mail. A certified copy can be obtained only from the Clerk of the Circuit Court for the county where the marriage license was issued.
