The AUDIT-C is a brief alcohol screen that reliably identifies patients who are hazardous drinkers or have active alcohol use disorders. n In men, a score of 4 or more is considered positive, optimal for identifying hazardous drinking or active alcohol use disorders.
Scoring and interpretation: A score of 1 is given for each YES response, except for items 4,5, and 7, for which a NO response is given a score of 1. Based on data from a heterogeneous psychiatric patient population, cutoff scores of 6 through 11 are considered to be optimal for screening for substance use disorders
The MAST screening tool is a 25-question test that is used to help identify an alcohol dependency. MAST stands for The Michigan Alcohol Screening Test. There are also shortened, and modified versions published over time including the Brief MAST, SMAST, and Mm-MAST.
Low risk (0 to 7 points): You probably do not have a problem with alcohol. Medium risk (8 to 15 points): You may drink too much on occasion. High risk (16 to 19 points): Your drinking could lead to harm, if it has not already. Addiction likely (20+ points): It is likely that your drinking is causing harm.
Short screening instruments, such as the CAGE, BMAST, AUDIT, and TWEAK, can be useful tools in identifying problem-drinking patterns. These instruments vary significantly, however, in their performance among different population subgroups.

The MAST can either be scored using a weighted scoring system or by assigning one point per item. Raw unweighted scores are calculated by summing the points assigned to each question (yes = 1, no = 0). Questions 1, 4, 6 and 7 are reverse scored (yes = 0, no = 1).
The most commonly used alcohol screening tests are: Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). This test contains 10 multiple-choice questions about how much and how often you drink alcohol and if you have any alcohol-related problems or reactions. The answers are scored on a point system.
