Criminal history reports shall be no more than five (5) years old at the time of employment. See Act 114 of 2006 for further detailed information on PA background check requirements.
Nearly all background checks include a criminal-history check, based on information supplied by the candidate, including their Social Security number. Criminal background checks will reveal felony and misdemeanor criminal convictions, any pending criminal cases, and any history of incarceration as an adult.
Act 34 of 1985 specified that employees of public and private schools and their contractors hired as of January 1, 1986, must undergo background checks. School districts may hire residents of Pennsylvania for a provisional period not to exceed 90 days, pending this clearance.
Clearances are required for an employee or unpaid volunteer at a minimum of every 60 months from the date of the oldest clearance. Clearances may be required more frequently based on licensure or employer requirements.
