Taum Sauk is said to be named for a Piankeshaw chief named Sauk-Ton-Qua. Though Taum Sauk Mountain is the highest mountain in Missouri, it is not the most prominent. Taum Sauk rises 522 ft (159 m) from an already elevated base.
Is Taum Sauk a difficult hike?
Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 6 h 6 min to complete. This is a popular trail for backpacking, birding, and camping, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day.
How does Taum Sauk work?
It began operation in 1963. Electrical generators are turned by water flowing from a reservoir on top of Proffit Mountain into a lower reservoir on the East Fork of the Black River. At night, excess electricity on the power grid is used to pump water back to the mountaintop.
Why did Taum Sauk fail?
Continued erosion of the embankment ultimately led to the 656-foot-wide bdocHub in the dike, which emptied the entire reservoir. Construction of a new Upper Reservoir for the Taum Sauk Pump Storage Plant took place from 2007 to 2010.
Overview and History of the Taum Sauk Pumped Storage
Sep 25, 2005 mid-1990s, Taum Sauk was operated approximately 100 days a year, mostly during the hot summer months when air conditioning demand was high.
