What Is A Car MOT? The term MOT stands for the Ministry of Transport. The government department introduced the test back in 1960 as a way of testing vehicle safety, exhaust emissions, and overall roadworthiness to help improve road user safety.
About the MOT The MOT tests some important items on your vehicle to check that they meet the legal standards. It isnt the same as having your vehicle serviced and doesnt check its general mechanical condition. The test doesnt cover the condition of the: engine.
What checks are included in an MOT test? The test takes about an hour and it checks: Axles, wheels, tyres and suspension. Body, structure and attachments (including exhaust system, seats and doors)
The USA is a big, big country. Vehicle safety inspections are mandated at the state level, and each state sets its own regulations and requirements. Shockingly, most have absolutely NONE! In total, 15 states require some kind of roadworthiness test.
During an MOT test, the mechanic or engineer will test and examine the following parts and areas: Electrical equipment - Checking the brake lights, fog lights, headlights and indicators. Tyres - Checking tyre condition and tread depth. Steering - Checking the strength and overall condition of the steering wheel.
