While its possible that DNA testing can help get your dog officially registered as a pure-breed with the American Kennel Club, the process for this registration is strict and not guaranteed. To be eligible for registration, you will need to purchase an AKC-approved DNA test kit through the AKC.
The DNA breed testing is very limited and only identifies ancestors up to 3 prior generations and cannot be used for AKC registering. However if you have an unregistered but pure bred dog, you may register with the AKC with the PAL program by submitting an application along with photos of your dog.
A prepaid, barcoded AKC DNA Test Kit costs $55 (per dog). AKC DNA Kits may be ordered through the AKC Shop, or by contacting the AKC: email: orderdesk@akc.org; fax: 919.816. 4255; phone: 919.233. 9767; mail: AKC DNA Test Kit, American Kennel Club, P.O. Box 900065, Raleigh, NC 27675-9065.
In cases of questionable parentage of any CKC-registered dog or applicant for registration, CONTINENTAL KENNEL CLUB will recognize and act upon the results of DNA testing to determine the parentage of any dog(s) in question.
If your dog has no papers you cannot get legitimate registration papers for it unless the original breeder does a litter registration and then gives you puppy papers for your dog. As for tags you apply for those usually at a city clerks office or the animal control office in your city or town. Hope this helps you!

While there are exceptions to the rules, such as applying for AKC registration if the dog has been registered with another domestic or foreign registry that has reciprocal rights with the AKC, there is no avenue to get AKC registration using a DNA test that shows a dog to be 100% single breed.
