(Gilder Lehrman Collection) On February 15, 1898, the battleship USS Maine exploded in Havanas harbor in Cuba, killing nearly two-thirds of her crew. The tragedy occurred after years of escalating tensions between the United States and Spain, and the yellow press and public opinion were quick to blame Spain.
A mysterious explosion destroyed the Maine on February 15, 1898, while in the Havana Harbor. Although the cause of the explosion was unknown, the American public soon became consumed with war fever, blaming the Spanish in Cuba for the attack.
Nearly a century and a quarter ago, the battle cry Remember the Maine! reverberated throughout every city in the land. This referred to the sinking of the second-class battleship Maine in Cubas Havana Harbor on 15 February 1898the pivotal event initiating the Spanish-American War.
The phrase, Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain! became a rallying cry for action. Although the Maine explosion was not a direct cause, it served as a catalyst that accelerated the events leading up to the war. Starboard bow view of USS Maine, 1898.
The ship lay at the bottom of the harbor until 1911, when a cofferdam was built around it. The hull was patched up until the ship was afloat, then she was towed to sea and sunk. Maine now lies on the seabed 3,600 feet (1,100 m) below the surface. The ships main mast is now a memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.
