An adjuster is an insurance claims agent charged with evaluating an insurance claim to determine the companys liability in a policy. There are different types of adjusters, including insurer adjusters, public adjusters, and independent insurers. A license is required in order to become an adjuster.
The adjuster does not take a direct fee from you at all, though you may be responsible for some minor fees and expenses. In this method of compensation, your adjuster takes a percentage of the compensation that is awarded usually somewhere between 5-15%, though 20% is not uncommon in some areas.
Public adjuster fees are limited to 20 percent. When a state of emergency is declared by the Governor for a natural disaster, the public adjuster fees are limited to 10 percent of the claim payment for one year after the declaration for initial claims for damages caused by that disaster.
They are paid by your insurance company. Independent adjusters shall not charge insureds a fee.
