The 2005 survey rated Exeter as the worst example of a clone town in the UK, with only a single independent store in the citys high street and less diversity (in terms of different categories of shop) than any other town surveyed. As of 2019, this final independent shop has closed.
Following its clone town stunt in Church Street (featured in Nerve issue 6 - see here), Liverpool Friends of the Earth have carried out a survey of shops and businesses in Liverpool city centre. The report shows that Liverpool is already far more a clone than a home town.
A clone town is a place that has had the individuality of its high street shops replaced by a monochrome strip of global and national chains that means its retail heart could easily be mistaken for dozens of other bland town centres across the country.
The Clone Town Britain Survey was designed by nef to help broadly quantify the loss of diversity on high streets and assess whether a given location feels like a home town or a clone town. There was an average of 16 different categories of shops, out of 25, on the high streets.
It is worth reminding any new councillors, elected this month, that there is a bottom line. Clone towns in the end make us poor, because people want to live and invest in places that feel authentic. Monopoly retailers drain money out of the local economy, local markets re-circulate it.

Globalisation and place In this argument, the idea of homogenous places comes about, those places that lack distinct character and are of the same or a similar kind or nature. This has been compounded by the spread of chain stores such as Subway or Starbucks resulting in what is known in the UK as clone towns.
A Clone Town is one which has the least variety of shops, and the highest number of chains. Home Towns, conversely, have a much clearer sense of identity, with greater variety in what the shops offer and a high number of independents rather than multiples.
We surveyed the first 50 shops we walked past. We then multiplied the number of types of shops by five, the number of independently owned shops by fifty, the number of chain stores by five, and added them all together. We then divided this number by fifty, and this determined our clone town rating.
